De-escalation

Focus on proactive, non-physical strategies to reduce tension and prevent situations from escalating. This includes using communication techniques, use of body language, tone of voice, understanding triggers, and recognising early warning signs to manage potential conflicts before they become physical.

Safety

Prioritise the safety of all involved, including patients, staff, and bystanders. This principle involves using risk assessments, creating safe environments, and employing safe physical interventions only as a last resort, ensuring that any response minimises harm to all involved.

Positive Relationships and Rapport

Build and maintain positive relationships between healthcare providers and patients. This involves empathy, respect, and understanding, which are crucial for fostering trust and cooperation, making it easier to manage challenging behavior effectively.

Reflective Practice

Encourage continuous learning and improvement by reflecting on incidents and responses. This involves analysing what worked, what didn’t, and how future responses can be improved, as well as supporting staff through debriefing and providing psychological support after incidents.
