Autism in Practice (6-Hour)

Overview

This CPD-certified course has been created to provide practical support to anyone working with autistic children and young people in schools and education settings.

Many of us are aware of autism and the effect it can have on learning and behaviour, but it can be difficult to know how we should adapt everyday practice to support autistic students more inclusively, and how we can respond more confidently and consistently to meet their individual needs.

Autism in Practice will help staff understand how autistic students may experience communication, sensory environments, transitions, learning, and emotional regulation and how unmet needs can shape behaviour.

Course attendees will learn practical inclusive strategies and approaches for real situations to enable autistic students to participate in learning most effectively, build their independence, and engage with staff, peers and their environment successfully.

The 6-hour, in-person course covers

  • Autism and neurodiversity, including a move away from deficit-based language.
  • How differences in communication, cognition, interests and learning may show up in the classroom.
  • The sensory and physical environment, including the eight sensory systems, environmental overload, visual supports and structured teaching.
  • Behaviour as communication, anxiety and emotional regulation.
  • Transitions, curriculum adaptations, social interaction and play.
  • Working with parents, carers and SEND professionals, alongside whole-school practice.

Who is this course for?

Anyone working with children or young people who would like to deepen their understanding of autism, learn how unmet needs can shape behaviour, and develop practical strategies that will enable them to support students for more inclusive and effective learning environments.
